Creating a seed list

Summary

You can create a seed list of email addresses in your account. All campaign sends of 2000 or more will also get automatically sent to this seed list (not triggered campaigns, transactional email, etc.).

It's a good idea to employ a seed list, as it will enable anyone on it to monitor sending activity from your account.

Please note:

  • The seed list has a limit of 25 email addresses
  • Seed list sends don't count towards your send allowance, nor will they feature in any reporting
  • In short, sends to a seed list work in the same way as test sends and the same limitations applying, which includes any external dynamic content not working

Steps to create a seed list

  1. Navigate to Contacts > Advanced features > Seed list.
  2. In the box next to 'Emails', enter the email addresses you'd like to add to your seed list. Only enter one email per line.

  3.  When happy, click Update. The email address or addresses will be added.

Similarly, if you want to remove an email address from the seed list, delete it from the box and then click Update.

Great to see this has now been implemented! A seedlist of 25 addresses is very restrictive though. A standard ReturnPath seedlist is already 400 addresses - that means we can't track inbox placement through ReturnPath. Perhaps as a next step you can implement an Inbox Placement Seedlist which can have up to 1,000 addresses and will count towards your send allowance?

    Hi,

If an email address is contained in the Seed List and the selected address book(s) for the campaign, will the email address be sent the campaign twice or will the presence of the email in the address book override the Seed List?

    Regards

    Jon

    Hi Melle and Jon,

Firstly Melle - thanks for your feedback. As you'll appreciate, we've only just launched this and, as with most of our features, we'll be looking to improve and refine it in future based on the user feedback we receive. So your comments are very useful to us and will help in shaping further development of it!

Jon - thanks for your question. If an email address is in the seed list and it's also in the selected address book(s) then, yes, this particular contact will be sent the campaign twice. However, remember that the send to the address book is the only one that will be counted in any reporting, not the send to the seed list.

    Hi Neal,

    Thanks for confirming.

Are you aware that when a Seed receives an email, the $CANTREAD$ link doesn't work?

    Regards

    Jon

Hi Jon. Yes we are. Links that require personalisation in any way won't work for seed list email addresses because there will be no contact data recorded against these addresses, or accessible for them, thus the links can't be personalised and thus they don't work. Hope that makes sense.

Hi Neal, that's a real shame (on the lack of personalisation). Doesn't that defeat the purpose of a seed list a bit? Other ESPs I've worked with would take a random record from the segment used and apply that (sample) contact data to the seed record.

this looked very helpful, but then saw the hard limit of 2000. we have some lists that are small and very important would prefer to send everything (except test sends) to this monitoring list. else we have to go back and draw up a separate solution for lists < 2000, which makes this kinda useless.

I agree with the comments about the limit of 2000. We are a small charity and none of our mailing lists are over 2000, but I would like all of the team to see what is going out. A more flexible seed list would be much appreciated.

Thanks for both of your feedback on the seed list only getting sent to campaign sends of 2000 or more. The feature’s still relatively new though, so, as mentioned above, we'll be looking to improve it in future based on this feedback.

Furthermore, you can make a feature request for more seed list flexibility here - https://support.dotmailer.com/hc/en-gb/community/topics/200432508-Feedback-and-feature-requests. The more support and votes it gets, the more likely it is that it will feature in our coming development plans.
